10 Essential Health Tips (The Basics to Practice Every Day)

"He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything." -Arabian Proverb

1. Move More
Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it's a stress buster. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that's great when you're up to it. Meanwhile, move more. Thought for the day: Cha, Cha, Cha…. Then do it!

2. Cut Fat
Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise. Thought for the day: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine…. Then be one!

3. Quit Smoking
The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill. Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? It seems the stars in every movie of late smoke cigarettes. Beware. Warn your children of the false romance or 'tough guy' stance of Hollywood smokers. Thought for the day: Give up just one cigarette…. the next one.

4. Reduce Stress
Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e.,Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. Thought for the day: When seeing red, think pink clouds….then float on them.

5. Protect Yourself from Pollution
If you can't live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It's a good pollution and dirt from the street deterrent. Thought for the day: 'Smoke gets in your eyes'…and your mouth, and your nose and your lungs as do pollutants….hum the tune daily.

6. Wear Your Seat Belt
Statistics show that seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes. Thought for the day: Buckle down and buckle up.

7. Floss Your Teeth
Recent studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it's because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don't? Thought for the day: Floss and be your body's boss.

8. Avoid Excessive Drinking
While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer. Thought for the day: A jug of wine should last a long time.

9. Keep a Positive Mental Outlook
There's a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. Thought for the day: You can't be unhappy when you're smiling or singing.

10. Choose Your Parents Well
The link between genetics and health is a powerful one. But just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn't mean you cannot counteract the genetic pool handed you. Thought for the day: Follow these basic tips for healthy living and you can better control your own destiny.

Suns Upbeat ... But Looking Up At Lakers

PHOENIX -- The one thing we know for certain after Shaquille O'Neal's first game with the Suns is ... the Lakers are looking great.

Shaq and the Suns? To Be Determined. Sure they can get better once they work out the kinks. But it's hard to imagine O'Neal making vastly greater contributions than the 15 points and nine rebounds he put in Wednesday night. The scariest notion is that even though the Suns can get better, so can the Lakers once they get Andrew Bynum back. And the Spurs got a little Shaq insurance themselves by trading for Kurt Thomas earlier in the day.

Then there are the practical matters posed by the Lakers' 130-124 victory: the two teams are tied atop the Pacific Division with 37-17 records, and the Lakers have won the season series, 3-1.

The Suns had an upbeat attitude afterward. O'Neal was more positive than I've ever seen him after a loss. Instead of reverting back to monosyllabic answers he was as glib and colorful as his arrival press conference. He stayed 10 minutes and practically had to be pulled away from the microphone.

"I haven't been this happy in a long time," he said.

He was in such a good mood he even fell on the sword for his new teammates.

"I will take the blame for this loss because I wasn't in tune with the guys," O'Neal said. "But give me four or five days to really get in tune and I'll get it."

Yep, plenty of Suns-shine, coming there way. Zippity doo-dah.

"I think we've got a lot to be encouraged by," Steve Nash said.

"I just think we'll get it all back and work on it piece by piece," said Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni.

But it could be that by the time the Suns get it all figured out it will be too late to win the division and too little to beat the Lakers or the Spurs in the playoffs.

O'Neal was doing his best to fit in with the Suns offense. However, the first time he caught the ball he was on the move, coming across the free-throw line, a place he rarely occupies in the half-court set. He looked out of place. A couple of times he even beat Nash (whom he called "a hip-hop version of Scott Skiles" and the "Canadian Eminem") down the floor on the break, although he didn't get the ball.

Shaq didn't bring the Suns to a standstill; they scored 20 fast break points, two above their average. But he wasn't a great catalyst either. Two of his outlet passes were intercepted.

He and Nash connected on just one alley-oop, despite Nash's talents in that department. And in one case the lack of familiarity had disastrous results when he knocked Raja Bell to the deck and out of the game with an elbow as O'Neal tried to block a Bryant shot.

As they discovered later on, it's not too bad an option to go to O'Neal in the low post and let him do his thing, the way he used to do with what he called his "other team." But the days of counting it as an automatic two points are over. He made only one of his first three shots, coming when he dunked over DJ Mbenga on an inbounds pass.

It could be that O'Neal's greatest contribution is to provide a boost to a teammate, like Kurt Busch drafting behind Ryan Newman to push him to victory in the final lap of the Daytona 500. (Might as well make a NASCAR reference, since twice as many people watched Daytona as the All-Star game.)

Amare Stoudemire moved back to the power forward position and flourished, scoring 37 points to go with 15 rebounds and three blocked shots.

"Playing power forward allows me to roam a little bit more on the wing," Stoudemire said. "As far as crashing the boards offensively, as far as being out there on the perimeter a little more. I think that's what you guys are noticing.

"It always helps when you've got another big guy in there with you, someone they have to pay attention to as far as rebounding goes."

If Shaq can't single-handedly alter the balance of power from conference to conference, as he did when he came West in 1996, he still can make events seem more important by his mere presence.

US Airways Center was packed in anticipation, the fans eager to cheer and snap pictures the moment O'Neal took the court.

A fan sitting behind me turned to his friend and said, "When was the last time you saw this place this full, this early?"

It felt like a continuation of the past two playoffs, which have pitted these teams against each other the first round.

"It was a familiar energy in the building," said Kobe Bryant, sounding like a Jedi knight.

Sixteen photographers and cameramen trained their lenses on Shaq as he stood for the national anthem.

The crowd wanted to salute him for everything they did, giving him standing ovations for his first dunk, an aggressive one-handed rebound as he fended off Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom, and a dive across the baseline after a loose ball, as he bowled over official David Guthrie and a couple photographers in the process.

He's engaged, he's looking to fit in. Best of all for the Suns, he said his hip and knees felt fine. He got stronger as the game went on, getting nine points and three rebounds in the fourth quarter.

"I'm in better shape than I thought I was," O'Neal said.

D'Antoni had said before the game that he planned to limit Shaq to 20 minutes, but O'Neal would up laying almost 29.

The Suns medical staff wanted to keep him out longer, but D'Antoni told them, "You talk to Shaq. He's staring me down."

Too bad for the Suns O'Neal didn't intimidate the Lakers as much. They scored 56 points in the paint, with Pau Gasol going for 29 and Odom scoring 22. The Lakers continued to get production from the bench, which scored 13 points in a noteworthy second quarter. And Bryant was unstoppable, torching Bell and then Grant Hill for 41 points on 16-of-25 shooting. It felt like one of those Jordan vs. Starks games, when Jordan was going to get his points no matter how good the defense.

It sure didn't take the Lakers long to adjust to Pau Gasol. They won his first game in a Laker uniform and are 7-1 with him. They're surging with confidence

"Know you can do it, don't think you can," Bryant told his teammates before the game. "We're a good team. We deserve to come in here and win."

And that's the difference. The Lakers know right now. The Suns think they can, hoping Shaq is The Big Diesel That Could.

Look who's posing as Marilyn Monroe

If you want to see Lindsay Lohan tastefully nude (for a change), pick up this week's New York magazine. The thrice-rehabbed starlet shed her clothes, donned a wig and channeled Marilyn Monroe for a themed shoot by renowned lensman Bert Stern.

Stern famously shot Monroe in 1962, six weeks before her death, for what's now known as "The Last Sitting." Forty-six years later, he called upon Lohan to re-create the iconic photographs, pose for pose. Lohan was comfortable with the nudity, though she admitted she did 250 crunches the night before the session.

On-set was Lohan's little sister, Ali, but mom Dina was absent. Perhaps it's because she's too busy working on her new E! reality show, aptly entitled "Momager," which chronicles her managing Ali's career as an aspiring singer.

Sources tell us Dina's been approaching stores and restaurants on Long Island "trying to get them to pay HER for filming there. It's ridiculous."

"Absolutely not true!" Dina countered to us. "We'll be shooting around and about Long Island. It is a little premature to talk about where, though, yet. We do love Long Island. I know a lot of the owners on Miracle Mile [the famous strip of posh shops and eateries in Manhasset].

"This show is more about our family, and Ali's music, and what we do. [It's also about] setting the record straight about what's been written about our family," Dina continued.

And Lindsay? "Lindsay will be in and out [of the show]. She's my daughter!" Momma Lohan said with a laugh.

But a source close to the family says Dina is "almost desperate, trying to get Lindsay involved with the show. Dina needs Lindsay if this show is going to be a big hit. The difference between just Ali and Dina, versus with Lindsay, is huge. Unfortunately, if Lindsay participates, it will only hinder her growth and stunt her career. She's a gifted actress and not a reality-TV star," the source tells us.

Michael Lohan was more direct. "Lindsay told me 'Absolutely not' when I asked if she was going to be involved [with 'Momager']," Lohan's father told us.

And Poppa Lohan wants nothing do with the "family" show. "I don't have any interest in that. I'm working for the church and I'm working on a mission for a crisis center," he told us.

Sony Ericsson to do first Windows phone

Posted by Ina Fried

Handset maker Sony Ericsson is announcing plans for its first Windows Mobile device, a move aimed at boosting the company's presence in the North American smartphone market.

The first product is a business-oriented phone with a QWERTY keyboard, but a family of devices is expected. Over time, Microsoft hopes Sony Ericsson will leverage its camera and music expertise to help build more consumer-oriented devices.

"They've really got some great consumer brands that we'd love to partner with and bring to Windows Mobile," Microsoft Vice President Pieter Knook said in an interview.

The company is expected to have more to say about Windows Mobile in general at its press conference Monday, but Microsoft isn't announcing any details on its future operating systems. There have been rumors aplenty about both a modest update to Windows Mobile 6 and a future version that would have much more touch-screen capabilities a la the iPhone.

Knook acknowledged that Apple has included some nice features with the iPhone, particularly in the Web browser, but declined to talk about when Microsoft might incorporate some of those advances.

"We are certainly investing in the browser," Knook said. "We are certainly investing in entertainment scenarios."

Photo handling is another area he identified as important. The most recent version of Windows Mobile allows for photos to be uploaded to Windows Live Spaces, but Knook said there's more work to do on that front.

"That's still an area where the user experience is more cumbersome than it needs to be," Knook said. As for music, Knook noted the company's recent purchase of Musiwave, as well as the work being done by Microsoft's Zune team.

"We do envisage that some of those experiences will come to the Windows Mobile platform in the future," Knook said.

Update: The device will be known as the Xperia X1, featuring a 3-inch VGA display with an "arc slider" to slide out the keyboard. The device will support HSDPA and HSUPA networks, as well as Wi-Fi.

Heavy cell phone use tied to poorer sperm quality

By Amy Norton

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Spending hours on a cell phone each day may affect the quality of a man's sperm, preliminary research suggests.

In a study of 361 men seen at their infertility clinic, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic found an association between the patients' cell phone use and their sperm quality.

On average, the more hours the men spent on their cell phones each day, the lower their sperm count and the greater their percentage of abnormal sperm.

The findings, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, add to questions about the potential health effects of cell phones and other wireless devices. Some studies, for example, have linked long-term cell phone use to a higher risk of brain tumors, though many other studies have found no such connection.

The concern is that, over time, the electromagnetic energy emitted from mobile phones could theoretically harm body tissue -- by damaging DNA, for example.

However, the new findings do not prove that cell phones somehow damage sperm, according to the researchers.

"Our results show a strong association of cell phone use with decreased semen quality. However, they do not prove a cause-and- effect relationship," lead researcher Dr. Ashok Agarwal told Reuters Health.

He and his colleagues based their findings on semen samples from 361 men who came to their infertility clinic over one year. All of the men were questioned about their cell phone habits.

In general, the researchers found, sperm count and sperm quality tended to decline as daily cell phone hours increased. Men who said they used their phones for more than four hours each day had the lowest average sperm count and the fewest normal, viable sperm.

"We infer from our results that heavy cell phone use ... is associated with a lower semen quality," Agarwal said. But whether cell phones somehow directly affect men's fertility is not clear.

Agarwal said he and his colleagues have two studies underway aiming to shed light on the issue. In one, they are exposing semen samples to electromagnetic radiation from cell phones to see what, if any, effects occur.

The second is a follow-up to the current study that is assessing a larger group of men. Agarwal said this study is more rigorously designed and will account for certain other factors like lifestyle habits and occupational exposures that might affect sperm quality.

Yahoo! Groups

From: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yahoo! Groups operate as both electronic mailing lists and Internet forums. Group messages can be posted and read by e-mail or on the Group homepage, like a web forum. Members can choose whether to receive individual e-mails or daily digest e-mails, or to read the posts at the web site. Some Groups are simply announcement lists, to which only the Group moderators can post, while others are discussion lists.

As well as providing e-mail relaying and archiving facilities for the many lists it hosts, the Yahoo! Groups service provides additional functions on the web site, such as voting and calendar systems and file uploading. The basic mailing list functionality is available to any e-mail address, but a Yahoo! ID is required for access to other features.

Yahoo! Groups competitor is Google Groups.

History

Yahoo! Groups was launched in 1998 as a logical extension of services that had already been developed by Yahoo - message boards, calendars, profiles. Yahoo! Groups were first known as Yahoo! Clubs. Unlike previous Yahoo products, this product was designed to allow much deeper levels of user control over creation, membership and overall direction of communities. Development was led by Doug Hirsch (product management) and Matt Jackson (lead engineer), both of whom have since left the company.

Yahoo! Groups quickly grew to be one of the largest traffic-generating products within the Yahoo! network of services; even today the site is typically one of the Top 5 page-view generating sites across the Yahoo network.

In 1999, Yahoo acquired eGroups.com, one of the most popular mailing list products at the time. About 8 months later, Yahoo merged the eGroups.com functionality with Yahoo Groups, resulting in some complaints from users of both services.

Yahoo Groups languished between 2000 and 2005. In 2001 Yahoo! deleted adult groups from its search directory, making it very difficult to locate Yahoo! groups with adult content. A Yahoo! user who wishes to find a group with adult content must therefore either know the exact name of the group, or attempt to find it by using a search engine or one of several online adult group directories. This has created what some view as an "underground" atmosphere for Yahoo! adult groups. While it is unclear whether the intention of Yahoo! was to diminish the number or merely the easy availability of these groups, adult groups on Yahoo! have continued to increase. In 2005, a revived ability to generate revenue through targeted search-related advertising resulted in renewed interest, which has slowly received new features since then.
